Jen alia novaĵero pri Esther Schor (profesoro de la angla lingvo ĉe la universitato Princeton) kiu nun verkas libron pri Esperanto kaj L. L. Zamenhof. Ŝi ĵus resumis tiun rakonton en artikolo por The New Republic, usona politika revuo.

Here’s another news item about Esther Schor (a professor of English at Princeton) who’s currently working on a book about Esperanto and L. L. Zamenhof. She just gave a summary of that story in an article for The New Republic magazine.

Incidentally, Dr. Schor also presented this article in a talk at the United Nations in honor of Zamenhof’s 150th birthday. The video of that talk is available online.

Esther Schor is a professor of English Literature at Princeton University. She’s currently working on a book about Esperanto and L. L. Zamenhof, the guy who got the whole thing started.

Recently Dr. Schor was interviewed by The World in Words, a podcast of PRI. She does a nice job of presenting the language and its speaker community in an intelligent, concise manner. If friends ever ask you what Esperanto is all about, you might want to point them to this podcast.

Tamen ĝi ankoraŭ bezonas nomon. Ĉu iu havas proponojn? Ĉu “literlavango”? “vortoverŝo”?

If you’re willing to brave the blizzard, we’re meeting again today at 6 in the Gleason Library. We’ll try out an experimental card game based on the English-language game “Scrabble Slam!”

It still needs a name, however. Any suggestions?

Jen la solvo por la pasintsemajna hejmtasko, kiun oni uzis en morfologia klaso por anglalingvanoj ĉi tie ĉe UR.

Tiuj, kiuj jam konas la lingvon rimarkos kelkajn simpligaĵojn faritajn por faciligi la ekzercon. Ekzemple, la vorto librejo estas malpli ofte uzata ol la pli moderna biblioteko.

Here’s the solution for last week’s problem set, used in a morphology class for English speakers here at UR.

Those already familiar with the language will note some simplifications to make the exercise easier. For example, librejo is a less frequently used translation for “library” than the more modern biblioteko.

Alvenis kelkaj novaj gazetoj el Germanujo kaj Svislando, nova versio de la DVD “Esperanto estas…”, kaj ni havos kelkajn bretludojn, inkluzive Skrablon. Ĉiuj estas bonvenaj, kaj ne timu se vi estas komencanto: ni parolas ankaŭ la anglan. :)

Our usual conversation table meets today at 6pm in Gleason. Some new magazines have arrived from Germany and Switzerland along with a new version of the film “Esperanto estas…” on DVD. We’ll also have some board games, including Skrablo (an Esperanto version of Scrabble). All are welcome, and don’t worry if you’re a beginner: we speak English, too. :)

Ĉu vi serĉas eĉ pli da semestrofinaj hejmtaskoj? :-)

Jen hejmtasko por UR-kurso pri morfologio—la studo de vortstrukturo. Kursanoj ekzercas sin en analizado per normigitaj ekzemploj tiaj. La tasko estas malkovri la bazajn signiferojn (morfemojn) kaj eltrovi la regulojn, per kiuj ili kuniĝas.

Ni afiŝos la solvojn venontsemajne.

Looking for more end-of-semester homework to do? :-)

Here’s a problem set for a UR class in morphology, the study of word structure. Students gain experience with regularized samples like this one, by finding the morphemes (the basic units of meaning) and figuring out the rules by which they combine.

We’ll post the answers next week.

Ĉi-semajne ni ne kunvenos kiel kutime por la konversacia rondo en biblioteko Gleason, ĉar la universitato fermiĝos de merkredo ĝis venontlunde por la tradicia dankofesta ferio. Veturu zorge se vi vojaĝos aŭte, kaj feliĉan dankofeston!

We won’t be holding the usual conversation circle in Gleason this week since the River Campus will be closed from Wednesday until Monday for the Thanksgiving break. Drive carefully if you’re traveling this weekend, and have a happy Thanksgiving!

At our Thursday meeting (at 6 in Gleason) we’ll watch films in Esperanto—including the infamous horror film “Incubus” with the incomparable William Shatner. Although he flubs many of his lines, his acting, as always, is craptastic.

Despite what you may have heard as a kid, there actually is a Santa Claus. Also known as “Father Frost,” he lives in Canada and speaks many languages, including Esperanto. Yes, really.
